Expertise Development in the Workplace Through Deliberate Practice and Progressive Problem Solving: Insights from Business-to-Business Sales Departments

Abstract Expertise is featured by continued high performance in a particular domain. research has primarily focused on absolute expertise structured domains such as chess and emphasized the significance of deliberate practice for development. We investigated development relative commercial part ill-structured domains. Due to ill-structuredness acknowledging use term expert organizational practice, we developed taxonomy distinguish between four types experts broader sense (relative expert, managerial evolved specialist, native specialist). Eighteen peer-nominated individuals from business-to-business sales departments German organizations participated our interview study. A content analysis was applied using both deductive inductive categorizations. The data clearly corresponds concept progressive problem solving rather than practice. Almost all respondents referred either “being thrown at deep end” others (assigned complex tasks) or “jumping one’s own accord (self- selected tasks). However, partners described features novices.
